Below is a description of some relevant completed and current work we are involved in either as prime or sub-contracted:
Agriculture Finance Fund Performance Evaluation: Banco Terra – ADIPSA – October-November 2009
ELIM Serviços Lda was contracted in October 2009 by the Agribusiness and microfinance programme of DANIDA, ADIPSA to evaluate the performance of the agribusiness fund managed by one of the leading Agriculture banks in Mozambique, Banco Terra. The Bank was charged to finance medium to large agribusinesses in Mozambique with a major focus in the Northern regions. The evaluations took place in Nampula province where the bank has more established operations. The assignment also served to recommend on the wayforward regarding enterprise development support services to be supported by DANIDA. The recommendations were well accepted and are currently being implemented as part of the 2010-2012 strategy.
HIV/AIDS and Gender Joint Programme evaluation – UNAIDS – October-November 2009
UNAIDS and its partners implemented a join programme on HIV/AIDS and gender in Maputo, Nampula and Tete provinces. ELIM Serviços Lda was selected at an open tender to conduct the end of the project evaluation in Maputo and Tete provinces.
Evaluation of Business plans for funding – ILO, Tanzania – September – October 2009
ELIM Serviços Lda was contracted in September 2009 to evaluate the business plans submitted by farmers’ associations and SACOOs for funding my one of the local farmers’development projects implemented by the International Labour organisation in Northern Tanzania. ELIM Serviços Lda evaluated 15 business plans successfully and has been invited to renew its contract and conduct evaluations of applications received by another project by ILO. The new work will be done in March 2010.
Consultancy for project screening under the community development strategy in TFCAs Ministry of Tourism, Mozambique (MITUR) Feb 2009 - current
ELIM Serviços Lda was sub-contracted as part of the ECIAfrica team to implement this recently won project. ELIM Serviços has supplied the services of one of its agribusiness experts. The main objective for the consultancy is to evaluate the feasibility of the business project proposal under the community development strategy that are to be submitted by the community legalized entities or joint venture arrangement between community based enterprise (CBE) and private sector investor and provide advice to the TFCA Unit on the approval process. The consultant will also provide manual guideline in monitoring the implementation of the approved projects as well as the inputs to improvement and advice the TFCA Unit on positions to take in regard to those projects
Trade Facilitation – identify Mozambican enterprises to participate in the APEX Brazil Africa trade Fair – Johannesburg – March- September 2009
ELIM Serviços Lda was once again contracted by ITP as part of its team to organise a trade fair on behalf of the Brazilian Exports Agency APEX. The fair was to have the presence of African retailers and wholesalers in 7 sectors of the industry. ELIM Serviços Lda was subcontracted to invite Mozambican and Angolan enterprises to participate in the event which took place in Johannesburg, South Africa on the 1st and 2nd of September 2009. 18 enterprises participated which were identified by ELIM Serviços Lda and approved by APEX.
Trade Facilitation – FRUTISUL’s participation at Mozambique Trade Fair (FACIM) 1st-7th
September 2008
As a member of FRUTISUL, ELIM Servicos lda provided support to FRUTISUL, (Fruit producers’ association in the south of Mozambique) to participate on this year’s FACIM. It ranges from leasing with CEPAGRI (agribusiness development centre) to organise the participants who will expose on FRUTISUL’s stand.
Research study into the ability of Mozambican farmers to respond to market demands for starch products August 2008
Ms Mata was hired by the Food and Policy Bureau of the University of Pretoria to be part of a team to collect field data on the ability of farmers to respond to increased market demands for starch products in the face of the current food and fuel crises by expanding production areas or intensifying current production. The field work took place in two of the most agriculture productive provinces namely Manica and Nampula, and the products studied were cassava, sesame, wheat, rice, sugarcane and corn. The study was part of an international research study that covered three counties in Africa and more in Latin America. Agriculture Potential of Gaza province to produce cereals - Consultancy
ELIM Serviços Lda was subcontracted by IIC to conduct a study in Gaza province and identify the regional suitability to produce soya, sugar beans, peanuts, wheat and maize in the province. The study comprised in the identification of production areas, farmers organisations within those areas, water sources, and transport and storage infrastructures. The wok was contracted by FDC (Fundação para o Desenvolvimento Comunitário).
Coordination of Brazilian trade expedition to Luanda May-October 2008 – APEX Brazil
ELIM Servicos ldahas was contracted to coordinate the activities for the next Brazilian trade fair in Luanda, Angola by the International Trade projects in Johannesburg. The trade expedition is being organised by the Brazilian Trade Promotion Agency (APEX). Ms Mata has to lease between the business community in Angola and in Brazil to set up business match-making appointments (B2B) for future Brazilian investors in Angola in October 2008.
Study on Market Opportunities for Agricultural Commodities January 2008 – May 2008, ADIPSA
ELIM Serviços Lda was subcontracted by ICC to carry out a market study on the economical mapping of Maputo province and analyse the main existing agriculture value chains. This economical mapping will be designed according to the market opportunities that each value chain offered to the small producers. Ms Mata was the Agricultural and Rural Finance Specialist in the team. The work was conducted for ADIPSA, the Agribusiness and microfinance programme of DANIDA in Mozambique.
Strategic Plan Development for ProCampo 2008-2013: May - Aug 2008
Using the existent business plan as a foundation, a consultative strategic plan is being developed for the next 5 years involving key staff members at a national level. Monthly sessions are held once a month to present results from previous sessions and collect feedback as well as introduce new objectives for group discussions.
Assessment of the Needs of 12 Municipalities October-November 2007
Ms Mata was subcontracted by EUROSIS to be the team leader of one of the teams of two members each assigned to conduct a needs assessment of the needs of twelve Municipalities in Central and northern Mozambique. Each team covered two municipalities and Ms Mata’s team worked with the Nampula and Montepuez municipalities identifying their needs regarding good governance, finance, human resources, and infrastructure among other needs. The programme is financed by the Danish, Swiss and Austrian Development Agencies.
Value chain analysis: viability and impact of commodity trade financing on agriculture commercialisation May – November 2007
Ms Mata as a consultant of ELIM Serviços was contracted by the Kenya Gatsby Charitable Trust (KGT) to conduct a value chain analysis of the impact that microfinance services have in the business activities of agricultural commodity traders – The case of AMODER and GAPI in Nampula and Cabo Delgado Provinces, Mozambique. Ms Mata wrote the study proposal to the client, conducted all field data collection and analysis as well as report writing
and presentation of results to the local client.
TA Fishing sub-sector February 2007– October 2009
ELIM Serviços Lda provided technical assistance to the National Institute of Fishing Inspection of Mozambique – support it to build internal capacity to better service the fishing industry and meet the EU food sanitary and phytosanitary quality requirements. FRUTISUL’s Business & Strategic plan October 2006 – April 2007
FRUTISUL strategic plan development: the research team was requested to facilitate the process of a strategic plan development for the Fruit Producers Association in the South of Mozambique, which would incorporate a sector development strategy, all association activities and a financial plan for the 2007=2010. The business plan was financed by IFC, Maputo
Consumption of locally produced products: Market study August 2006
ELIM Serviços Lda was contracted by ComMark Trust in South Africa to conduct a market study to determine the consumption of Mozambican products by South African businesses in Maputo, Gaza and Inhambane (hotels, restaurants and fast food chains.
